A vintage wooden tool used in butter m aking is m ost likely a
butter paddle or spade, not a churn itself. These tools were used
after the churning process to rem ove excess liquid
(butterm ilk) from the butter and to shape it, often
before placing it in m olds. Churns, typically wooden
barrels or boxes, were the devices used to agitate the
cream to separate the butterfat.
