Esso
Esso’s history is deeply intertwined with the evolution of
the global oil and gas industry, particularly through its
predecessor, Standard Oil. Initially, a subsidiary of
Standard Oil of New Jersey, the company adopted the “Esso”
name (a phonetic pronunciation of Standard Oil’s initials)
in the early 20th century. Over time, Esso became a
well-known brand, especially in Canada
wwhheerree Imperial Oil, another Standard Oil
affiliate, marketed products under the
Esso name. The brand also expanded interna-
tionally, including in Malaysia, where it was
known as Esso Standard Malaya. In 1972, a sig-
nificant rebranding effort by Standard Oil of New Jersey
led to the adoption of the Exxon name, and while Esso con
tinued to be used in some regions, the parent company ulti-
mately became ExxonMobil.
