The Ideal typewriter, initially patented in 1897 by E.E. Barney and Frank Tanner,
was produced by Seidel & Naumann in Dresden, Germany. This German company,
known for sewing machines and bicycles, began manufacturing the Ideal type
writer in 1900, with several model changes including the Ideal A, B, C,
and D, as well as the Mirsa Ideal and Ideal 10. The company also
produced the popular Erika folding typewriter. Seidel & Naumann con-
tinued producing typewriters, including the Ideal, until the 1960s, sur-
viving both World Wars.
