The Royal Typewriter Company, established in 1904 in New York, is renowned for
its durable and innovative typewriters. Initially, it was founded by E.B. Hess and
Lewis C. Myers, but gained financial backing from Thomas Fortune Ryan in 1905.
The company’s first typewriter, the Royal Standard, was introduced in
1906, featuring a “flatbed” design. Royal later moved its manufacturing
to Hartford, Connecticut, in 1909. The company continued to produce
typewriters, including the popular Royal Portable, until the 1970s, and
remains in existence today under different ownership.
