The Regency TR-1, released in October 1954, was the first commercially
manufactured transistor radio. It was a collaborative effort between Texas
Instruments (who designed and built the transistors) and Industrial
Development Engineering Associates (IDEA) (who manufactured
the radio). While the TR-1 was praised for its novelty and small
size, its performance was considered mediocre compared to
vacuum tube-based radios of the time.
